The Scottish Parliament has supported the holding of a new referendum on independence from the United Kingdom. 72 MPs voted in favor of the appeal to London, while 55 voted against.
The initiative was put forward by Scotland's First Minister John Swinny - the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), which advocates for the region's separation from the United Kingdom.
Recent Elections
In early May, the SNP became the largest political force in the Scottish Parliament for the fifth time in a row, gaining 58 seats. Swinny then called the election results a confirmation of the party's course towards independence.
The decision of the Scottish Parliament may be an important step towards achieving independence from the United Kingdom.
